Cleaning wheels

I recently got a bunch of Sonax and a bottle of the Wolf's Rim Shield, and had every intention of doing a full detail on my wheels today. I took one off, to really get the face and barrel clean, and ran into a problem:

The Sonax and my gentle wheel brush seemed to have no effect on these buggers. What's the best way to remove something like this? PS, i'm not talking about the old wheel weight goop, i figure some goo-gone will get that off. I'm concerned with the "freckles".

well, i found a claybar that i bought a decade ago and never used. I tried it on the wheels, and it seems to work...sorta. I basically ended up using it the same way you'd use sandpaper...vigorous rubbing, and the spots *mostly* came off. But I spent 45 minutes and only managed to mostly clear 1/4 of one wheel. Basically, i felt like a guy trying to paint a house with a toothbrush: it gets the job done but not that well and it takes forever.

Anyone got other suggestions?
