BOV Question

i have a stock 05 STi, 74k miles on it, and my question is this, i dont know the pros/cons of a BOV or for that matter how they work/ what they do, i DO like the sound of a turbo charged vehicle with a BOV rolling by, so can someone give me the run down? and would it be better or worse to have one on my car?-------
