Why the eff was he changing lanes in a drag race?

The road isn't straight. Riverside follows the river from deep south to downtown-ish. It's long and sweeping with minimal traffic control and very dark in sections. About where the crash happened, the road has a series of abrupt lefts and rights. I assume he may have been trying to cut the apex of the corner and clipped the other car? 90 would be extremely fast at this section.

This road would be a decent road race course but not my first choice to use as a drag strip.
