2004 WRX with STI transmission

Hello everyone haven't been back online in a while. So my 2004 WRX blew the right front axle, I was at a drag strip and went too hard again lol. So I replaced the front right axle and as I was looking I saw that my axle stub was almost an 1" out of the transmission. I tried to tap it with a pointed bar so it wouldn't slip off the stub. It didn't go it much further but now I can't pull it out and it seems like it's in the diff but idk. What do you think? I have pics.

Well don't have much experience with the transmissions in general, but i do believe you can pull the stub out with a slide hammer. At which time you can get a better idea of why its not going in all the way. On the older 5 speed's though you had to split the case in order to remove the stubs...Since this is a 6 Speed you should be ok though.

I'm thinking it's my front diff. I need to take the diff cover off, the stub will not go in any further.

pulled the transmission out, and started tearing down the transmission. The nice thing about my problem is I was able to take off the front transfer case (bellhousing). First take off the sun dial locks, and mark the sun dials where they are for backlash etc. I used a dead blow hammer and a larger round punch to loosen the sun dials. The sun dials are normal lefty loosey. Simply remove the 8 bolts to the front transfer case, using a 14mm socket on an impact, and two of them will have brackets in the way so use your dead blow and a 14mm box wrench. Then use the same box wrench for the 3 nuts below the transmission oil pan. Then set it on its side and use the dead blow hammer to hit the front transfer case away to separate and slide it off the input shaft.

I looked and the differential looks okay, the roller bearings might need to be replaced, because of the stub not being fully clipped into the front differential, it was slipping and caused the top of the stub to wear down the splines.

In simpler terms, the front diff drain plug had the dirty oil. The rear half of the transmission (the part with all your gears and transfer gear to deliver power to the rear differential) did not have any dirty oil, not even metal fragments on the magnet plug

Oh man what a job! That's odd... The front diff looks like and open diff. Are the STi's open in the front?

V7 sti may be open or suretrac. I am not too sure

What year STi is that tranny from? STi's only ever had some form of LSD front and rear from 2004 on to the best of my knowledge. That is definitely an open diff.

Yeah it's a Jdm 2001-2002 sti trans. Version 7. Code TY856WB1AA

Update: so I dropped off the transmission at AAMCO and they ran it through their parts washing machine and the bearings were good and they replaced the seals and a new passenger side axle stub and assembled for 100$ ? can't beat it!!! Picking it up tomorrow

Yep the axle stub must of pulled out when I replaced my half shaft, I also replaced my ball joints on both sides at the same time and when hitting the knuckle with a 2 lb dead blow hammer it must of pulled out of the transmission because of the extra leverage with the ball joint out from the control arm. then I drove around not knowing it pulled out because I already did the half shaft before the ball joints and I didn't triple check my work. Sucks to suck but you learn things the hard way and it will never happen to you again. Lol yeah I'm upset the Jdm 2000-2002 sti 6 speeds were open front differentials. But oh well, it can obviously handle 400awhp all day, nothing was wrong with the differential, just the stub, due to not being fully clipped into the front differential. Haha you win some you lose some and luckily it wasn't my whole transmission! Lmao. Can't wait to get it back and start the install of the fresh transmission! Also JJ I might need a ton of severe gear Amsoil fluid! I'll msg you as soon as I'm ready.

Hey JJ sorry I haven't PM'd you I found the only local Amsoil dealer around here and he was closed. I needed to drive my car it was too long without the car, so after some research I used Mobil 1 synthetic 75w/90 and since I have a 2002 JDM transmission and rear diff, there is no LSD so no special blend fluid is required. I got away with 12$ a quart and got 7qt from Pepboys. What a time saver!
