As long as you are in New York I will do it for nothing... you pay my gas and expenses.

It's not so much that I get annoyed easily -- it's that I've seen a ton of guys mess shit up -- most of which they didn't know any better because they lacked experience with subarus -- I mean certified A techs having issues -- so it's not a matter of whether you're capable of following the manuals -- for me it's a matter of experience.

For example -- how can you tell whether the timing components are Chinese or not?

I'm not making it a knowledge contest -- it's just a simple fact that there are some tricks and also some hidden traps that come with experience and time. If I was cranky, this would be a discussion about your parts selection or something else -- it's not a matter of me just being cranky

If you want everything done right -- I really recommend having everything done from the crank to the timing belt by a Subaru specialty shop that has a long time in the community -- then you bolt on everything else and drop it in the engine bay. That's really the crux of what I'm trying to tell you at this juncture.

Now, if you're still hell bent on assembling your own engine -- just know that things like timing jumping one tooth can cause issues -- I've seen 4 cars recently that for whatever reason were off on timing.

It's not meant to be abrasive or an insult -- it's just a simple fact that people in a particular trade with a decade of experience become very good at what they do -- especially when they focus on only one car -- can I build a motor for a Honda or an Audi? Probably. Do I want to? Fuck no. I've had my hands in more than a dozen subaru engine builds -- from the crank -- and I still would not want to work on putting heads on a different platform -- I would rather pull the longblock and have it built and timed by someone I trust and then put that engine in the car myself.

your so much smarter than me i don't have the power in my brain to make a response...but thanks for that fuji.

The only thing i can say is i would love to get the block taken to a subaru specialty shop/dealer, but i am tight for money as this rebuild was not planned. So i have to come up with money i dont have. So taking it to the dealer place isnt so proper. I was thinking on saving the money for labor, and just having the short block rebuilt and balanced? Im on a budget build, and with the mods already done and thousands in parts already in her i am hoping i can reuse some parts, im hoping on only replacing certain parts like:

New OEM nitrated crank
New ACL rod and main bearings
New Manley H-beam Rods
New CP 100mm pistons

There is an old adage from car repair

Inexpensive
Quickly completed
Reliable

Pick only two -- and it seems you're picking the first two -- just know that it's always cheaper to do something right the first time -- but then again you wouldn't be in this scenario if you followed that one. Yes, I am being a dick about that -- having George (holy) help you will be better than flying solo -- but it's not brining the same experience level I'm talking about to the table. Also, you may even be able to get some form of warranty on the motor build -- there are small businesses out there that still stand behind their work. Overall, if you can squeeze enough together that you can get a timed motor from a Subaru shop you will be much better off.

King bearings are less expensive than ACL and I believe them to be a vastly superior bearing -- not a large chunk of change in price, but decent enough to help.

You may be able to re-use your rods if they measure in spec -- and that's a decent chunk of money.

Personal opinion -- I will drive a beater before I build my car half ass. Even after a decent amount of experience, I still want that Subaru specialist to look over my shoulder while I build my own motor -- and I'll pay the person before I try to do it without that person looking over my shoulder to double check what I'm doing.

LOL  that was the previous owners fault, read my journal. Im still pissed to this day. Not my fault... Im looking for one of these haha

Reliable + Cheap = Not Fast
Cheap + Fast = Not Reliable
Fast + Reliable = Not Cheap

Yeah im gunna have to figure something out and fast. i could sell what is not needed, but i dont want to downgrade. lol I do want to get it tuned to e85 so i might have a set of DW 850cc for sale ;)

If you don't have a second vehicle -- that's the best mod I can tell you to get.

A tuned primary/only vehicle is never a good idea.

yeah ive been looking for a beater, might just consider getting a 98 impreza rs 5 spd with miles for like 1500$

A diesel. My wife drives a new Jetta TDI and the fuel economy is just amazing. The torque around town makes it fun to drive already. It's a great daily IMO, and Im not overly tempted to mod it.
