Any ideas?

Sounds like the cable could be bad.

Did you take it to a dealer to see if its covered under warranty?

I agree... it sounds like the cable or mechanism is corroded or dirty.

Not wanting to hijack but have a related question. My e brake is getting weak and I need (according to dealership) replace the parking brake pads on the rear of the rotor. Since I'm a DIY guy went parts stores and they all told me I can only buy the whole assembly... really?!

Did they actually check the pads? I'd try the adjuster on the ebrake lever unit itself first.

I'll check the cable, but if it is the pads where do I get them without having to by a whole new assembly?
