The Official Photography Improvement Thread

Let me lead with this: I am not a professional photographer. I do not have a 5 thousand dollar camera. I am not an expert, and I am definitely still (always will) be learning. What I do have is a entry level DSLR with a few relatively inexpensive lens options along with a love for taking photos and a desire to improve, and for that reason I started this thread to allow everyone to have a place to post photos they have taken and get some constructive criticism as to how the shot can/could be improved. Post a few shots, with the settings used to obtain them. Try to limit it to 2 and 3 shots per post, this will allow everything to remain more organized. The shots can be anything, just no nudity.


Please keep all feedback constructive, and focused on helping each other improve. On the other side if someone offers a critique please realize they are only trying to help you improve. Let's keep this thread open to all discussion about various styles and techniques.

Light is everything. Knowing how to control how the camera interprets light is what allows one to capture the image they see in their minds eye.

Focal Length - 85mm
Shutter Speed - 1/400 sec
Aperture - f/1.8
ISO/Film - 400

This shot below was taken yesterday, at around 8:30PM.

Focal Length - 85mm
Shutter Speed - 1/500 sec
Aperture - f/4
ISO/Film - 200

Around 5PM.

Focal Length - 85mm
Shutter Speed - 1/1000 sec
Aperture - f/2.2
ISO/Film - 400

Focal Length - 85mm

Video requires a LOT of equipment to have come out well. The T3I and 5D Mark3 both shoot full 1080P and have a great selection of boom mics and lenses with which to use. What are you using to record?

Well I hang out with a bunch a Car ppl.. and they said that I should start Recording some vids on the cars and put on youtube.. Basically just cruises.. etc.. butI have a Sony Handycam DCR-TVR260

TBH there's not a lot of room for improvement with just a basic handycam.

I just mean that it's a basic handheld camera. There's not a lot of adjustibility and thus not a lot of room for improvement in terms of quality unless we are only talking about personal filming style.

I don't understand what your looking for here? Take video, post video, I'll give some criticism. Wash, rinse, repeat.

This is obviously going over your head. He isn't trying to be rude, he is merely saying that with the basic device you have, there isn't much in the way of adjustability and improvement.
