Wow, thats pretty awesome, I'm glad to see he was driving it hard!

Me, too! He's taken it to the track before, from what I've heard.

Had a good time at Cars & Coffee today. I snapped a few pics of my car once the parking lot had cleared out:

And since I washed it last night, a random thunderstorm had to roll through today.

I also decided to eliminate the slight drone the Magnaflow has above 75ish by having Midas install a Vibrant Performance 12" resonator (#1794, for those curious). Immediately it's quieter on startup, and hopefully the drone will be completely gone on the interstate. I also had the tech weld the driver's side hanger on the muffler so it's more secure (it was welded partially in one corner versus the entire side of where the hanger attaches to the muffler). He also welded the resonator in such a way that my midpipe hanger is no longer scrunched up slightly, relieving the tension on the downpipe and muffler that I had. The damn stock length hanger was too short, the XL hanger too long.

So the 8th SCCA AX of the year was Sunday, 9/11, and I was thankfully on my game and took home the class win! The points race for STM is tight, and after our next event on 9/24 we'll all have the max # of events for points, then we start replacing events with lower points. Edited video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdRguAqJwOA

However, as you can see in the video, I was blowing smoke out of the exhaust at WOT while on course... While in grid, I'd restart my car for the next run (did 5 total), and a nice cloud of white smoke would come out. And I've been told that I was blowing blue smoke while launching at the start line and black smoke while driving to/from the course to grid.

I've had this happen before, after a track session, but it always went away. Every time I started the car yesterday and today, it'd cough up a plume of white smoke. And it looks like I burned 1/3 quart of oil at the AX. Definitely not normal consumption for me. I did take the oil filler cap off and rev it and while I didn't see any smoke come out, I could smell some faintly with the engine idling. I'm doing a compression check Friday, hopefully my motor is fine and it's the turbo.

Here's a video of my cold statup Monday morning and the oil filler check that evening. Sorry for no sound, but my phone's video codec isn't recognized by Windows Live Move Maker.

She stopped smoking when I started her up at work Tuesday, 9/13... That's was good sign, at least.

Some pics from the AX. I call this sequence, "Death of a Cone: No Mercy."

I knew it was coming, and now I'm at least glad I didn't bother doing a compression test myself. Comp test came back good on all 4 cylinders: 140, 130, 130, 130 for 1-4. Leakdown, on the other hand, was less than 20% on all but #4, where it was 42%. Hello, #4 cracked ringland. Good to see you're still floating around...

Had this done last Friday.

Not sure what I'm going to do at this point. I decided on the way home that I'll be co-driving a friend's 05 STI at the AX tomorrow, at least. I've burned another 1/3 quart driving around this week. The Service Manager at the dealership is going to pull me copies of the consumption test procedure next week, and I'm sure I'll be back there to verify consumption. Basically, here are my potential options as of this moment:

1. Screw the warranty, buy a built shortblock from TopSpeed, have them install and tune it, and tweak my heads as necessary. Rough cost, ~$6k.

2. Buy the build shortblock, but have someone local (FasTech, maybe) install the block with my existing head and adjust as necessary. Maybe ~$4k-$5k.

3. Pick up a used 07 STI shortblock and have it installed. Roughly $1k-$1.5k for the block, probably another $1k to have it installed.

4. Attempt a warranty claim, it gets denied, I pay the dealership for the teardown, and have all the parts shipped to TopSpeed. Then, see #1, with possibly more spent.

5. Attempt a warranty claim, it's approved. OEM $H!t is installed, properly broken in, and then tuned ASAP to lessen the chance of this happening again.

Obviously, #5 is the least likely result since the car's been modified since 5.5k miles. Thoughts/opinions...?

On another note, I had a good time at the United Way autocross my region put on last Saturday. I placed 2nd of 12 drivers, with the winner being a guy from another region that is a great driver (used to run Timeattack in a 350Z). He whipped me by 1.7 seconds in a 370Z with wide wheels and Star Specs. I knew he'd win going in, though.

I co-drove my friend with a 05 STI, and ended up beating him. But he was having an off day. We were both not used to the new surface (more loose and gritty), and I had to adjust to his tail-happy (IMO) car and not-as-aggressive brakes.

I am pretty sure that option #5 is not going to happen. Obviously #1 is the most appealing but how likely is it? Probably 2 or 3 if you want to be logical.

Doubtful, but you never know. The Service Manager at the dealership knows my car is modified (and has been for over 40k). Spoke to SoA yesterday and they opened a case. CSR said he would call my dealership and get back to me in 1-2 days. True to his word, he called the service manager this afternoon, who then called me. They want the car in ASAP, which will be Friday provided they have a loaner available. The SM wants to push for a new shortblock, so hopefully it will work out.

It's been quite awhile since I've updated this journal, so I figure it's about time for an update.

First off, the engine was "repaired" "under warranty." Long story short, the dealership approved the repair and I actually contacted Subaru of America to open a case or file or whatever they called it. Neither SoA or the dealership could 100% assure me that the warranty would cover this, but both sides said that they'd let me know if I had to authorize the repairs. As it turns out, the day my car was being finished up the local SoA rep showed up, saw the downpipe, and instantly voided my warranty. The dealership being agreeable, they covered the repair under good faith. However, I ended up having timing belt-related noises that were due to worn parts and the dealership not telling me of such, so I ended up with 2 new timing belts, 2 new smooth rollers, and a new tensioner. After speaking with the dealership owner, I only ended up paying the price of the tensioner itself, as a failure on the dealership's part to inform me the tensioner was worn led to the rest of the issues. They also totally destroyed my Fumoto valve for my drain plug, which they also paid for a replacement.

Now, even after all this, my car still burns oil. After my experience at this particular dealership, I'm betting it was either an improper break-in (only drove ~200-300 miles before the next AX) or an error during reassembly. After all the hassle I went through after the "repair," I'm being more the latter than the former. I didn't bother to complain to the dealership about this. They were nice enough to cover the repair after SoA said no, and I don't trust them after all the post-repair issues, anyway. I'm burning roughly 1 quart per 500 miles. Absolutely stupid. Thankfully, as long as I monitor the oil, it seems to run alright.

On the racing front, I ended up winning my class in my region. I'm hoping to do it again this year! The first event is 3/4 and it's looking like I'll have some stiff competition with more experience... A fast-as-hell Evo, a turbo Miata, and a guy that bums codrivers and can drive the wheels off just about anything. Sounds like fun. :D

As a result of the engine, I've been speaking to several shops and have more or less settled on the path I want to take. I toyed with trading/selling the STI, but nothing else I'd consider right now thrills me as much (E46 M3, 335i) and/or needs more TLC than I'm willing to give, or is less than ideal for DD/track/AX use. I'm planning to use a shop in Atlanta that recently started building motors, and another shop to do the swap. Both work hand-in-hand to provide affordable packages for their customers. I actually took some time the week after Christmas to drive to ATL and visit both shops. I have a good feeling about the engine builder and the shop, just need to set aside some $$$, first. While I'm at it, I'll be doing the following:

1. ACT HDSS clutch
2. ACT Streetlite flywheel
3. Killer B baffling/windage tray
4. Killer B oil pickup
5. Grimmspeed 3-port EBCS
6. DW200 fuel pump

I have all but the last item sitting nearby. The engine will be a "basic" forged block, with the newer OEM crank and oil pump, custom-spec forged pistons and rings, King bearings, and all OEM gaskets. The builder also recommended the 2.0 water pump, as he says it won't (or is much less resistant) to cavitation than the 2.5 pump.

I also installed a Grimmspeed-knockoff AOS by S2 Industries (ebay). It's identical to the GS piece, and seems to do a decent job filtering the blow-by. To make monitoring easier, I installed clear reinforced PVC hose versus the included black "standard issue" heater hose.

Other things I'd forgotten to note is that I swapped to Valvoline Synpower 5w30 since my car is burning so much damn oil and I've found several deals on Synpower lately... Namely, 5 quarts and a Bosh Distance Plus filter for $30 or less after rebate.

I also swapped the transmission and rear diff fluids to Extra-S. The shifting feels easier/smoother when cold (though that may disappear) and nowhere near as much random drivetrain noise when cold, versus the Motul Gear 300. Think I'll be sticking with this.

As for other parts, I got in on TiC's group deal for their FCAR bushing with the MSI housing, as well as snagged a Whiteline Roll Center Adjustment Kit. No clue when these will appear on the car.
