ILSMKU2's timing issue

This thread is for any tuning related questions not covered already in the forum. Feel free to post any questions about your cars tune, self tuning, and datalogs for review in this thread. One of our members who are experienced in tuning will be happy to assist you.

If you are needing a data log looked at please email it to: tuners@igotasti.com

If at all possible, please include Air/Fuel readings with a wideband sensor. It will make diagnosis over email much easier! Not a requirement for close loop logging but a must for WOT runs!

Please read this as to what and how to log... http://www.igotasti.com/vBforum/show...ide-to-Logging

Just the thread I was looking for! :D

I'm happy to hear about this forum so thank you in advance. I am looking for advice on how to tune my cars cobb stg1 OTS map so my car runs better.

I have a 2011 STI sedan with an invidia Q300 exhaust and cobb AP, stg1 ACN boost select map OTS map.

A month ago I tried the stg1 ap OTS map and was doing a log in 4th WOT. It did not go well. Scared the crap out of me. I still dont know what happened. Cobb told me I let off the gas. I did NOT. Car just jerked on me real hard. No CEL or blinking lights. Log below.

I removed stg1 map and went back to stock tune. Month later I exchange my exhaust for a new one (had a funny sound) and the funny sound went away. I had wondered if my exhaust was culprit of bad AP experience a month back.

So I try the AP STG1 ACN LWG map and Cobb told me my logs looked good. But I wasnt hitting target boost. I was only hitting 15. They said run normal stg1 ACN map. So I did and these are my logs. Now I had been logging 4th 2k to 6k WOT. But cobb told me to use 3rd. So I did both because I only see numbers in the knock columns in 4th.

3rd WOT
https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?hl=en&key=tTQ0Cd1w9jHwnakD8Mnvd3g&authkey=CKTymN8G&hl=en#gid=0

3rd into 4th WOT
https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?hl=en&key=tVuQEn9eSWXbLrHD8A1zFuw&authkey=CIvp3tUH&hl=en#gid=0

4th WOT
https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?hl=en&key=tXP1Fe3p3exdXscvcwtXgbQ&authkey=CPDMsYIL&hl=en#gid=0

What can I do to make that go away? And is this still better than the factory tune?

Thank you all very much!

I'm no tuner but I had similar symptoms and it turned out to be a bad knock sensor. I just replaced it and whala, knock was gone then went back for a final tune. All was well after that.

Hey Don! Glad you could make it!

Looks good actually. There really are not many knock events happening in those logs other than high but acceptable IDC's. I would like to see how things progress over the course of a few days. If you could take just one log of normal driving, both around town and on the highway. Don't go WOT but vary your rpm and load.

Then take one log going through all gears from 1st to 4th and WOT (do this in a safe area with no other traffic).

As STiFreak suggests, we certainly can not rule out the possibility of a bad sensor and this will help us to determine that by revealing random events that your current logs did not capture. This will also give us an idea as to what is happening over the entire range of driving.

Also when you log you can cut out some of those parameters. Check out this guide as to what to log. You want to focus on "Timing Specific Log".

If we find that there can be some improvements we can certainly help you out with that.

Thanks for the tip! I would hope mine is not faulty as its a brand new car. That said, Ive learned to not assume to much with brand new cars. But I'll keep that in mind say it doesnt stop. Thank you. :D

Sounds great! I will do just this and report back once I have all the data. I was actually looking at that log thread last night! So Im glad you mentioned this because I wasnt sure what I should be logging. I will make the changes on my AP and get the logs up as soon as I can. Thanks so much for the help gentlemen.

Thanks,
Don

Update

EDIT: Dammit. I thought I toggled it, but its missing RPM. Sigh. I broke the law to make those logs...lol. I'll try this one more time. Im sorry guys. My bad.

I hope these logs are right? They look odd to me. But I checked what the timing log listed (at least I think I did).

Here is a log of me in S mode for a short distance before I realized I wasnt in S#.

Here is a drive I took in S#

And here is the log on the way back from the drive above in S#

If I did the logs wrong, Im sorry. I will try again.

Thank you,
Don

Yeah RPM is pretty darn important.

The cruise trims are good. No need to adjust anything there.

The logs showing WOT have some concerning knock events. Unfortunately because you didn't log RPM we can't tell you where to adjust your map and for that you get the :tard:

Take another short log. Run through all gears from 1st to 4th all in one shot. No need for 5th or 6th. Again try to do it on an isolated road somewhere.

Just to confirm and ask, what gas are you currently using and is it from a trusted source.

Really... I'll check again. I didn't see it but i could :tard:

Got it... Yeah it looks like you could stand to use and adjustment between 4800 and up in the high load cells.

One thing you can do to test this is make a global adjustment to your timing using the AccessPort. Remove 5* of timing globally and run it one more time. If you see no knock then you know you have to much timing and have to remove some in the range I suggested.

To do it, connect your AP and start the car. Go to the "tune" menu and scroll down to "Adjustments" and then to "Adjust Timing" Remove 5* and do your run. You should not observe any knock. Log while you do this so we can see the results.

If this works then we can go from there.

Yup that seemed to work.

Okay... You said you have AccessTuner Rcae?
